Force system to stick to VPN only with Mac OS X built-in firewall. By standard you'll probably have to configure it via terminal (command-line); however. To allow all traffic to a certain IP that goes through VPN related ports, we could add the. How to Use VPN on Your Mac. By Jordan Merrick 12 Feb 2013. Difficulty: Intermediate Length: Long. OS X can manage multiple VPN settings using the configuration option. For example, you may have a VPN profile (another name for a your VPN settings) for an office in the US and one in Australia.
I'm very new to VPN as I always have been using SFTP and FTP to manage websites. I have a new project where my contacts are all windows people and they can't really help me. Shouldn't I be able to see a device, icon, or other mappable item somewhere within my mac while connected?
It tells me I'm connected, but even when I use GO Connect to Server it doesn't show up.Is there a simple test I can do with terminal or something else to see if I'm truly connected to the server I need ot add / modify / delete files on?Thanks,Bob. VPN does not connect you to a server, but rather another network. You can test the VPN connection simply by pinging a server on their network. If you can ping their servers, then you've gotten as far as their network (I presume that you pinged a server on their network that isn't otherwise visible from the outside). At that point, treat connectivity issues the same way you would as if you were on-site on their network and having the same trouble. You didn't explain what you are trying and how it fails, but generally speaking, issues at that point are probably related to things like authorization and authentication for whatever services you are attempting to access. If you are more specific about what you are doing and what the symptoms are, I might be able to offer some advice. You picked on something that might be of some value.I could ping the network whether connected through the VPN or not.
I could not ping the server on the network that I need to manage (and it didn't make a difference whether or not I was connected through the VPN)I'm basically trying to get ftp access to the server on the network so I can build the website. They don't allow regular ftp, so they told me I could do the same with VPN.I'm not seeing any errors or anything like that, I'm just not seeing a device, the name of the server on my network list, and I cannot ftp after I'm connected to the VPN. I was told that I would be able to use ftp once connected. When I try to 'connect to server' it takes forever and eventually it times out.Thanks,Bob. Try using the server's IP address instead of host name and see if that makes a difference.

It's possible that you are not getting the DNS for the remote network (e.g., your computer can't resolve their host names). This may be a configuration issue on their end.Depending on how the VPN is configured, mDNS (Bonjour) may or may not work over the connection. You won't see servers appear in the Finder / networks if mDNS isn't working. That doesn't mean that you can't access them, it merely means that they won't be automatically detected. You want to use an FTP client like CyberDuck or Transmit to connect to their server. Go to server will accept FTP URLs, but you can only mount an FTP server read-only that way.
Also, if you aren't getting their DNS service, you need to specify the IP address of their machine. Apple Footer. This site contains user submitted content, comments and opinions and is for informational purposes only.
